One of our goals at the academy is to constantly challenge our students on an elective level. We do this through a variety of ways and will continue to add new electives to the schedule, so keep checking back here for future Cougar electives. Below you will find a few of the electives that we offer now at the academy.
Spanish I Honors
Students may earn High School credit by taking Spanish in grades 6-8. By spreading the curriculum over 3 years students have a greater opportunity to learn and practice the language. Each year students add to their knowledge through a variety of activities. Emphasis is placed on proper pronunciation, grammar usage, and vocabulary. Students practice their skills each year during a field trip to a local restaurant where they must converse with the waiters in Spanish. In 8th grade students are able to converse with native Spanish-speakers while volunteering at a community outreach center.
Audio/Visual/Sound Booth
Students learn to operate video cameras, computer-based presentation equipment, and audio sound equipment to project words and video during morning worship and Chapels. The focus of the class is to bring a student-created professional quality worship experience to Chapels and opening services.
Robotics
Available to 6, 7, & 8th grade students our robotics class is taught by Mr. Hicks. The class uses the LEGOs NXT Robotics kits. Students in this class will learn to build, program, and troubleshoot their robots as they advance them through a series of tasks. Depending on the number of students in the class students will either be working alone or with a partner. Each student or team will be assigned a robot, a computer, and a flash drive to use throughout the year. Grades will be based on robot quality, programming accuracy, and class participation.
Yearbook
Yearbook curriculum provides instruction in journalistic skills such as digital photography, photo editing, page layout and writing. The children enjoy capturing the many aspects of achieving academic excellence in a Christian environment. Sporting events, field trips, and the Christmas programs are among the many activities the students document. A yearbook student will attend a fifty minute class once a week; however, assignments may provide the opportunity to attend activities outside of the regularly scheduled class time. Teachers are encouraged to call upon the yearbook class to document the many exciting and creative activities taking place in their classes.
Puppetry
The Cougar Puppet team uses many puppets to brighten chapel services for preschool, elementary and middle school chapels. This class is designed to get the children thinking out of the box through memorizing songs and skits as well as performing in front of an audience. Through puppetry they make the Word of God come to life for our students. This class is a wonderful outlet for those creative minded students.
Cooking
Students will experience a hands-on experience in a professionally equipped kitchen. As a part of this program, they will have the opportunity to learn classical cooking methods as well as aspects of proper food preparation, nutrition, and sanitation. Students will be encouraged to explore their own style and creativity under the guidance of Chef Denise. In addition, the program includes a general education component that is designed to provide a solid academic foundation for our students’ educational growth.
Rocketry
Students will learn basic rocket science. Each student will design and build a working model rocket that includes a recovery system design. A launch day will be scheduled at a qualified launch site. Students will be given specific responsibilities that are essential for a successful launch day.
Woodworking
Students will construct models using wood, paper, glue, hammers, wallpaper paste, electrical wire and paint. Class will include listening to and reading directions and following detailed information.
Preschool Aide
Students will help pre-school teachers prepare lesson plans and for and assist during lessons, tutor students as needed, and plan and teach one Bible lesson each month. Students MUST have pre-school director’s approval.
